I would give this book a 5 star, except for some grammar and a few bits that were possibly stylistic but felt cliche.These were however, the classic cowboy style comments often given to the characters of old school films.
They were not cliche in that they did convey the gist of what the character would have been thinking.
The other reason I have to drop a star is the author might have plugged his son a bit too much,
but that is a father's prerogative and certainly, in this case, much of it is true, so, fair dues.
Outside of those minor items, the book is an outstanding read. Love, War, Befriending, Betrayal, Good, Bad, Ugly and the good guy wins!
The actual romance, action, adventure where very well conveyed as they were certainly real elements all of us on the ground felt at some points throughout our deployments in Afghanistan. Of course, we never acted on the romance but we certainly felt love for the people we lived and fought with.
As well, the book completely captured the real politics of the people and place better than any book I have studied on the subject. The book touched on the complexities of our modern war fighting better than most, and yet, no book can touch the true depth and layers of that as the multitude of humans and their idiosyncrasies simply can't be fathomed, only summarized. So great job there, too.
The respect and loathe for the enemy due to their own choice of tactics and use of religion to justify their atrocities is captured well and described thoroughly. Some people there have an ideology so far removed from anything we can understand, that this book truly helps to to understand them by descibing their ways of operating and what our troops are up against.
On the whole, while note Le Carre or even Clancy, the book was a solid write and a good read.
Recommended for anyone who wants to get a real idea of what life is like for the Special Forces soldier in Afghanistan
and what the people are like on both sides of the fight. Politics aside, this book is a treasure trove of info and a golden story of life and love and war in far away lands with vastly different ways.

R. Harper Mason accomplishes an important mission with his fictional novel THE WARLORD'S DAUGHTER LOVE AND WAR IN AFGHANISTAN many of the idiosyncratic aspects of Afghani life are discussed in novel form and the reader is left more informed about a fascinating culture that is in the crossfire of so much of the world. It mixes the experiences of his son who related to him the manner in which the Special Forces interact with the people and the government of Afghanistan, allowing room for the intrigue of the insidiously clever way the Taliban and al-Qaida function and how they maintain control over a country that has been 'assisted' by Russian and UN and American troops. All of this information he manages to mix with a love story that again explores the cultural differences between the Western world and the traits of Afghanistan. It is a long book (in excess of 500 pages) but one that reads fairly quickly. The drawbacks are the usual ones in novels about countries unfamiliar to us; difficult names. references not well clarified, and an apparent need of an editor to correct grammar and spelling errors. But for the reader who really wants more information about how Afghanistan functions, this is a very worthwhile read. Not poetic as the Afghani books by Khaled Hosseini, but for a change this one is from the vantage of a US soldier off to a country to discover a people with whom he learns to relate. This is a book written by a 6th grader. A boy 6th grader infatuated with the heroics of fighting wars then rewarded by getting the girl, though he's not quite sure what to do with her.
The "love story" is hastily thrown together (to get it over with so the fun stuff, i.e., war, can continue. No character development, the dialogue is repetitiously boring (I'm going on a mission; I'll be worrying and waiting for you; I'll be back), and the happy ending is a bit overblown with Tarzan, I mean the hero, saving the girl in the nick of time.
As far as the war story goes, the bits of about getting ready to kill, killing, and the aftermath of killing were written with dispatch as far as I can tell. But it did get boring, so about half way through (at the part where a Pentagon general was reviewing why missions in Afghanistan went wrong) I started skimming. Faster and faster I went through pages and pages of special forces action, spying, lists of weapons used, treachery, special forces training, buying information, being duped, buying friends, being betrayed, and killing, killing, killing.
A couple impressions, perhaps unintended, are created by this book. Just point the American military at anyone labeled "enemy" and the heros, i.e. suckers, will go-get-em. The allies we buy will not stay bought. We will not be finished in Afghanistan until the money runs out.
